Customer Service

Hey Guys,

Today I want to ponder a little about customer service.

The nutrition and fitness industry is a funny one when it comes to customer service.

In an industry where results speak louder than the loud people saying them, looking after people just seems to get left behind. How often do you see statements like this,

“When Dave first came to see me he couldn’t lift his fat arse up off the couch. Now he his throwing cars through buildings and attacking Tokyo”.

Or,

“My clients have tried every other coach and method out there before they came to me with zero results. Now they have the life of their dreams as my system is the only thing that works. Everything you think you know is shit. I am God”.

Well, something along those lines anyway. But when was the last time you saw a statement like,

“My clients mean the world to me. They come first, the rest is just a nice bonus”.

The fact is that you rarely see it, and when you do it’s normally from a very high level coach. This isn’t a coincidence. The top people in any field are those that care the most about their craft and put hours and hours into perfecting it. This means that in a service based industry, having good relations with clients is just as important as getting results. It’s all well and good being able to get people into the best shape ever, but no one is going to want to work with you if you are a dick.

There are plenty of horror stories out there from people who wait days to hear back from their coach or that they get a cookie cutter programme that hasn’t been developed for their needs (I heard once a coach insisted that the client eat almond butter, even though the client was highly allergic to nuts).

When using a coach the same rules apply as for any service you pay for, you want a certain level for what you pay. These include,

Being polite and curtious.

Doing what they say they will, in the time frame given.

Respond to questions in a timely fashion.

Being approachable at all times.

When it comes to any type of coach or teacher it is worth while talking to a few and seeing which fits best with you (this also doesn’t mean the cheapest or the nicest). Everyone has a different way to be motivated and taught. If your coach can’t present their system or ideas to you in a motivating and engaging way, then it might not be the right fit.

Remember that you are paying for a level of service as well as knowledge. Don’t sell yourself or your goal short.

Oh, and while we are at it selling is NOT customer service. I hate it when I phone a customer service line and they try to sell me something. That isn’t SERVICE that’s SELLING! Giving people information and prices is fine (and needed) but things like objection handling and trying any kind of ‘close’ have no place at all in service.

Stay Healthy,

Mike

A rant about supplements

Firstly this isn’t a rant about supplement companies and the way that they market their products.

Every fitness professional has a rant about these companies and the way that they market their products to vulnerable and impressional people.

Well that’s how advertising works. They make vulnerable and impressionable people buy shit.

If advertising and marketing didn’t work, we would all live in huts, in the middle of fields and only care about what really matters in life. Instead we all want to have the nicest stuff and look the best we can so that we can impress other people.

The fact is, is that if you look at that advert in muscle and fitness that claims that by taking this tablet you will gain pounds of muscle, lose pounds of fat, get an amazing pump and possibly transform into the love child of The Hulk and Optimus Prime while doing your curls, then you deserve to be a little disappointed.

However there is something about appealing to our vain side that makes grown adults lose their minds. Most of us know that these supplements are either bogus or that the results have been exaggerated, but this still doesn’t stop us.

There is a little voice in the back of our heads that just whispers, ever so gently,

“But it could work this time, you’ll never know unless you try it…”

And we cave. We convince ourselves that there must be an easier way, and that this is it.

It isn’t.

Now don’t get me wrong, there are some great supplements out there that do a great job. They can really add the finishing touches to a programme. But that’s all they are, finishing touches.

Nothing is going to beat good whole foods and a solid nutrition programme.

So if you’re looking at buying a pack of that FREAKBEAST NITRO 3000, maybe you’ve only got yourself to blame when you don’t turn into Phil Heath over night…

Stay Healthy,

Mike

Tips for Brides looking to get in shape for the big day!

Hey Guys,

Today I want to share with you a quick little article I did for Kiss the Bride Magazine.

Here are some quick tips for Brides to help you get in shape for the big day!

Real World Diet Tips for looking great in your Wedding Dress and on your Honey Moon

Hi there,

We all know that ever bride wants to look great in their dress on the big day and look even better in the Honey Moon photos. Brides everywhere work so hard to get in shape for their weddings but seem to always stubble at getting the perfect body that they want.

But where do you start?

So what factors make some brides more successful than others?

Why can some people get in shape easier than others?

Well to be honest there are a lot of factors that can determine the out come of any diet and fitness plan, however the most common is how dedicated the person is and how consistent they are with implementing a smart, well thought out nutrition plan.

The key is knowing what a smart, well thought out nutrition plan is!

However even if you have a great plan and all the will in the world, there will always be a few stalls or hiccups along the way. What do you do when this happens? How do you deal with these tricky problems?

With that in mind here are some quick tips that can make a massive difference to your plan and how you look on the big day.

1.     Give yourself enough time. Everyone seems to start a crash diet 4 weeks before the wedding. This is a bad idea! You want to give your self a couple of months so that you can do it nice and slow. This way you can still have treats all the way through the diet (CHOCOLATE!) and still get in great shape

2.     Have a plan. There is so much information on the Internet these days its scary. Everything seems to contradict everything else and it all sounds either to good to be true or torturous. The truth is that a sound plan is somewhere in the middle. It allows you to do things at a good pace, is balanced, and doesn’t deprive you of anything

3.     Know what to do when you get stuck. There comes a point in any diet where fat loss stalls, the key is knowing what to do when this happens. Normally it is just a little change or tweak that gets things moving again, but it is important to have a plan of what to do (see point 2).

4.     Have someone to lean on when times get hard and kick your butt when you’re being lazy. Things happen in real life that can hamper any fat loss plan like work, family, personal commitment, kids etc. During times like this it is important to have someone that will help you get through it. On the flip side there are going to be times when you just want to sit on the couch and eat cookies instead of training hard. It’s at times like this you need someone to kick your butt and remind you about that dress and those photos!

5.     Figure out how to stay motivated. For some people it is a photo of their honey moon on the fridge, writing down a list of goals or regular progress photos. It is important to have a way to motivate yourself to keep you on track for that big day. Find out what works best for you and keep it in a place where you will see it regularly (the fridge, mirror of phone back grounds are popular).

Getting in shape for your wedding is just another thing that requires you to plan and organise. However just like your wedding, as long as you have a smart plan and stick to it, you will have the day of your dreams!

If you have any questions or you would like a little extra help with your plan, please give me a shout on Twitter (@weddingdietplan) or if you want something a little more private and confidential, please send me a message on the website!

Stay healthy,

Mike

Great article on helping people with their dreams

Hey Guys,

Just thought that I would share this article with you.

A lot of people often talk to me about starting their own business, travelling and living life on their terms. They think that I am insanely lucky to do something I do for a living (I am, but luck had little to do with it). They want to take a big leap in their own lives but they are scared. Something is holding them back from the life that they want.

Now don’t get me wrong here. I had to work 2 jobs for a long time before I could realise my dream. I also had the support and help of some amazing people (mostly lack of support from others) that gave me the courage to take the leap.

One of the main things that hold people back is money. We often think we need money to survive.

Turns out not every does.

Read the article HERE and let me know what you think.

Stay Healthy,

Mike
